Banks of a Trumpeter

This trumpeter swan was coming in for a landing on the east side of a lake in northern Illinois during the golden hour, but changed its mind at the last minute, banking up and right before deciding to land a little farther south on the lake.

Life bonds and family behavior

Trumpeter swans typically form pairs at three to four years of age and often remain together for life. Mated pairs migrate together, and during nesting season they use their large, webbed feet to cover and insulate their eggs—an unusual behavior among birds that helps retain warmth in cold conditions.
