Northern Illinois is blessed with abundant protected forest preserves and open spaces. Amidst the suburban landscape, these areas offer a quiet sanctuary—a nurturing environment for birds, animals, and all things wild. It’s in these havens that I find solace, observing and capturing the beauty nature presents. Living in the Fox River Valley area of Kane County, the majority of these images were captured within Kane and adjacent counties, with the exception of Stephenson County, where bald eagles congregate in winter along the Mississippi River.

Witnessing raptors command the Illinois skies—catching thermals or hunting for prey—is truly captivating. Our state is home to a rich diversity of these birds, from soaring buteos and swift accipiters to ospreys, falcons, eagles, harriers, and kites. Furthermore, Illinois hosts eight distinct owl species, including the diminutive Northern Saw-whet and the cherished winter arrival, the Short-eared Owl. For a comprehensive guide to Illinois raptors, we recommend Wild About Birds courtesy of the Illinois DNR.

From spring to autumn, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird graces northern Illinois as our most prevalent hummingbird. The males are unmistakable with their namesake ruby-red gorget, while the females tirelessly usher new generations of these aerial acrobats into existence. Photographing these dynamic birds is always a delightful challenge, and even with a single species, each encounter offers a unique and cherished experience.

Songbirds are all perching birds, part of the order Passeriformes, distinguished by a unique toe arrangement that helps them grasp branches. This order is divided into three suborders, with Passeri being the largest. Birds in the Passeri suborder are known as oscines, or songbirds, and number over 4,000 species. Their size varies widely, from the tiny Golden-crowned Kinglet to the substantial Common Raven.  (Source: Audubon)

My photography largely aligns with nature photography, which, according to Wikipedia, “encompasses a wide range of photography taken outdoors and devoted to displaying natural elements such as landscapes, wildlife, plants, and close-ups of natural scenes and textures.” Nature photography tends to prioritize the aesthetic beauty of a scene, and these galleries are dedicated to presenting a broad collection of these images, distinct from those in other sections.
