I am the eagle, I live in high country
In rocky cathedrals that reach to the sky
I am the hawk and there’s blood on my feathers
But time is still turning, they soon will be dry
And all of those who see me
All who believe in me
Share in the freedom I feel when I fly
~ John Denver, Eagle and the Hawk

We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters; the deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the juices in the meadows, the body heat of the pony, and man―all belong to the same family.

The owl . . . is one of the most curious creatures. A bird that stays awake when the rest of the world sleeps. They can see in the dark. I find that so interesting, to be mired in reality when the rest of the world is dreaming. What does he see and what does he know that the rest of the world is missing?

High o’er the coast of Alaska, he flies
Wide ‘cross the prairies, he covers the skies
A picture of courage and beauty
A symbol of freedom and right
Riding the winds through the mountains
Guided by nature, an occasional eagle in flight

but they who wait for the Lord
shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

Raptors | Gallery Description
Raptors have always held a unique place in my heart and in my photography. There is something profoundly moving about witnessing these powerful birds—owls, hawks, eagles and harriers—carve their way through the sky with a grace that defies their strength. In the rush of a wingbeat or the quiet intensity of their gaze, raptors embody both wildness and wisdom, a fierce presence woven into the landscapes they command.
This gallery brings together some of my most meaningful encounters with these remarkable birds across Illinois and the greater Midwest. From the silent flight of a Short-eared Owl skimming the prairie at dusk, to the sharp, sunlit dive of a Bald Eagle hunting along the Mississippi River, each photograph reflects a moment of deep observation and respect. Many of these raptors migrate over vast distances, following ancient pathways shaped by instinct, weather, and the rhythms of the seasons. Others remain year-round, keeping watch over forests, wetlands, and open fields.
My hope is that these images offer viewers a window into the lives of these extraordinary birds—creatures that inspire awe, humility, and a renewed sense of connection to the natural world. Raptors remind us that the sky is still very much alive, and that wildness, even in our modern world, continues to soar above us if we only take the time to look up.
