Pelican at Twelve O’Clock
American White Pelicans may look a little wonky, but they’re some of the most graceful fliers in the sky. When they pass through during April migration, we try to find the lakes they pause at, and catch them fishing and cruising overhead—this one came straight at me before the group veered north, smooth as ever.
Worth Knowing
American White Pelicans are among the largest birds in North America, with a wingspan that can reach about 9 feet. Unlike Brown Pelicans, they’re typically inland birds that feed cooperatively in shallow lakes, and they don’t dive from the air for fish; despite their size, flocks can soar high and wheel in unison with surprising elegance.
