Tighten Up the Formation
An incoming squadron of American White Pelicans tightens up their formation and banks westward, wings stretched wide as they move with calm precision across the spring sky.
From the Field
Pelicans are skillful food thieves as well as cooperative feeders. They frequently steal fish from other pelicans that are trying to swallow large prey and succeed roughly one-third of the time. They are also known to target Double-crested Cormorants returning with fish, and in dense nesting colonies, some pelicans even steal food regurgitated by parents feeding nearby chicks.
