In the Softly Falling Snow

A Sandhill Crane pauses from foraging in a corn field during an early spring snow. Two adults and a juvenile were leisurely poking around in the dirt while a gentle snow fell around them. They were surely looking forward to sunnier and warmer days ahead, as were we.

A Remarkable Survivor

So old are Sandhill Cranes and their close relatives that they are considered among the most successful life forms on Earth. According to Smithsonian Magazine, cranes have outlasted more than 99% of all species that have ever existed, representing a lineage that stretches back millions upon millions of years.
