Early Independence
Sandhill Crane colts leave the nest within a day after hatching and follow their parents through marshes and grasslands. Both parents initially feed the young, but the colts gradually learn to forage on their own. First flight typically occurs around 65–75 days, and young cranes remain with their parents for 9–10 months, accompanying them during migration. (Source: Audubon)
