A Few Golden Minutes
Instead of a golden hour, it was more like a few golden minutes. Tom Skilling had mentioned the clouds might break toward the end of the day, but they held tight until the very end, when the sun finally emerged from the main cloud layer—only to sink into another band of clouds before disappearing into the horizon. The shorties hadn’t been very active, but as luck would have it, one decided to begin hunting during that brief window of light, passing directly through the frame.
Did you know
Short-eared Owls hunt by flying low over open ground, often hovering briefly before dropping onto prey. They locate prey primarily by sound, but also by sight, and unlike many owls, they may hunt during daylight hours—especially in northern regions—though they are most active at dawn and dusk.
