Yellow-headed Blackbird

The Yellow-headed Blackbird is on the endangered list in Illinois, so it was quite a treat to observe and capture this beauty (male) in the reeds and cattails of Goose Lake in northern Illinois this past June. As the cattails and reeds grow taller during the summer, this blackbird is usually heard before it is seen with its unmistakable song that resembles the grating of a rusty hinge. They are excellent in-flight insect hunters, and this beautiful Yellowhead had just snagged himself a nice little snack.
