Stickin’ the Landing

An Osprey stretches out its talons to land on the branch of a dead tree, settling in briefly while calling out from time to time. The vocalizations appeared to encourage her two remaining chicks as they prepared to fledge.

From the field

Ospreys are long-distance migrants, capable of logging more than 160,000 miles over a 15–20 year lifespan. Scientists track their movements using lightweight satellite transmitters, which can pinpoint location within a few hundred yards for several years. In one documented case, an Osprey flew roughly 2,700 miles in just 13 days—from Massachusetts to South America. (Source: All About Birds)
