Fish, it’s What’s for Dinner!
Papa Eagle delivers a fresh fish to the nest for his growing eaglet. With only one eaglet to feed this season, the adult bald eagles don’t have to work quite as hard for food as they do in years when two — and sometimes three — eaglets are competing for every meal.
Did you know?
The first eaglet is fed on the very first day after hatching and quickly develops a size advantage over any siblings. During the first two and a half weeks, the male typically brings food for both the female and the chicks. In the early days, the female tears tiny pieces of fish to feed the eaglet. By the fourth week, both parents actively forage and bring similar amounts of food to the nest. As the chicks grow older, the female often delivers more food than the male, and by around the seventh week, eaglets begin tearing pieces of fish on their own. (Source: Avian Report)
