Challenge Accepted
And now for something completely different… Cicada Killer Wasps. These impressive wasps appear in Illinois starting in July, emerging from underground nests dug about a foot deep in loose, sandy soil. They fly quickly and dart just above the ground around the nests of one or more females, and while the males can seem aggressive, they pose no real threat to humans—mostly just flying around to check us out.
When I came across a group of them (they’re mostly solitary) methinks it would be a fun challenge to get some WIF shots (wasp-in-flight), and here are a few frames . . .
Nature’s Heavy Lifters
The cicada killer wasp is remarkable not only for its ability to detect and paralyze its prey, but also for its strength in flight. A female cicada killer can carry a cicada that is equal to—or even heavier than—her own body weight, an extraordinary feat of insect aeronautics. (Source: Cicada Killers)
