Pretty sure this sometimes silly and often goofy bird is recognizable and needs no introduction, even in silhouette. A Double-crested Cormorant dries out in a tree as the smoke-softened, hazy sun sinks toward the horizon.

This dark, long-bodied diving bird floats low in the water with its thin neck and bill raised, then perches upright near shore with wings held half-spread to dry. The Double-crested Cormorant—rarely appearing noticeably crested in the field—is the most widely distributed cormorant in North America and the species most commonly seen inland. (Source: Audubon)
