A Snowberry Clearwing moth enjoys the milkweed buffet in early July, darting from bloom to bloom and often mistaken for a bumblebee thanks to its bold coloration and rapid flight.

Clearwing Moth Adaptations

Rather than a beak like a hummingbird, clearwing moths use a long, tongue-like proboscis that unrolls from a coiled tube to reach nectar deep inside flowers, and the proboscis can be nearly twice the length of the moth’s body, while large eye markings and a bird-like appearance help deter predators.
