Clearwing Flying Machine

With the summer colors gone along with most of the autumn hues, I found myself looking back at late summer images and rediscovered this clearwing hummingbird moth in flight. I didn’t have many visits this year, and this was the only one I managed to capture airborne, which always makes me smile.

Did you know?

There are four hummingbird moths in the genus Hemaris found in North America: the hummingbird clearwing (H. thysbe), snowberry clearwing (H. diffiniis), slender clearwing (H. gracilis), and Rocky Mountain clearwing (H. thetis). In addition, the white-lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata), another hummingbird-like moth, is also found across North America. (Source: Save Active Wild)
