The Fishin’ Hole
A Great Egret strikes a pose before lunging for a snack on a warm evening a couple of weeks ago, just before the cold moved in. The long plumes that grow from its back during breeding season nearly led to the species being hunted to extinction in the late 1800s, ultimately sparking conservation movements and some of the first laws to protect birds.
From the Field
Great Egrets were nearly wiped out in the United States in the late 1800s when their plumes were heavily sought after for use in fashion. Early conservationists intervened, protecting colonies and halting the slaughter, and the species eventually rebounded—becoming the symbol of the National Audubon Society. (Source: Audubon)
