Ring-necked Duck

Okay, so who’s responsible for naming ducks? This is a beautiful Ring-necked Duck, but where’s this “ring” that’s part of its name? On the other hand, look at the beautiful bill on this bird, so distinct. So how about a Ring-billed Duck instead of a Ring-necked Duck? There’s a white band on the bill for both the male and female. If you view the 2nd image, you can see the “ring” of what appears to be dark maroon or purple near the bottom of the neck. It’s not always easy to see, but indeed, there is a ring. Still, just sayin’, Ring-billed Duck?
