Born to Sing

An Indigo Bunting lifts his voice from the top of a sunflower, filling the summer field with song as warm light spills across the blooms.

Field Notes

Although Indigo Buntings appear brilliantly blue, their feathers actually contain melanin; the blue color is created by the way light scatters through the feather structure, which is why the plumage can appear dull brown-black when viewed with light passing through from behind.
