Immature Bald Eagle Talons
No fishing pole needed when you have talons like this young’un. An immature Bald Eagle swoops down over the Mississippi River, extending its powerful talons to snatch a quick fish snack from the surface.
Did you know: Bald Eagles are not skilled fishers when they first leave the nest. Young eagles often begin by scavenging dead fish along shorelines, then progress to picking up floating fish in rivers and lakes. It may take months before an eagle reliably catches live fish, and even longer to become an efficient hunter. As a result, juvenile bald eagles must spend more time fishing to catch the same number of fish as adults. (Source: Journey North)
