Hello Handsome Buck!
The buck stops here . . . A white-tailed buck checks out the does in the distance on a relatively mild late December afternoon. You can see that he’s recently been rubbing trees with his antlers, as there are wood remnants at the base of his rack. He pauses just long enough for a closer look before moving on, confident and alert. He’s quite the handsome buck, for sure.
Subtle signals in plain sight
In order to express visible signs of concern about a situation, some male deer emit a pheromone that causes patches of hair on their legs to spread open, creating the appearance of white spots. These visual cues are part of a broader communication system used during the breeding season and moments of heightened awareness. (Source: Fact Retriever)
