Impressive Grips

The talons of eagles are impressive, no doubt. According to scientists at HawkQuest in Colorado, a bald eagle’s gripping strength is ten times stronger than the average grip of an adult human hand. Earlier estimates suggested a pressing power of 700 to 1,000 pounds per square inch (psi), however researchers at HawkQuest note the more realistic range is between 300 and 400 psi.

More About Eagle Talons

The talons are made from a hard protein called keratin (same as our fingernails), but the real strength doesn’t come from their talons but from the strength of the muscles, tendons and bones. As strong as they are, they are just as gentle as can be when it comes to rolling and maneuvering their eggs in the nest, which is currently taking place all over the Midwest now.
