Preparing to Fledge

Mama keeps a watchful eye on her lone eaglet as it struts with purpose from one end of the nest to the other. This brief but telling moment came just days before fledging, when the young eagle’s confidence and curiosity were clearly on display. Within about five days, the eaglet would take its first leap into the air, beginning life beyond the nest.

Nature Note

Baby bald eagles, known as eaglets, grow rapidly in their nests, reaching skeletal maturity within 10–14 weeks. During this period, their parents provide near-constant care, feeding them small pieces of raw meat up to eight times a day. This intense early nourishment supports rapid development and prepares eaglets for eventual independence. (Source: Avian Bliss)
