Mesmerizing Fire on the Prairie

There is something mesmerizing about watching the prescribed prairie burns each spring here in Illinois. As the March sun climbs higher in the sky and the grasses begin to dry, the Campton Township Open Space team starts scheduling burns across the local landscape.

I happened to catch the burn at Corron Farm last March and was drawn to the ebb and flow of the fire line as it moved across the prairie. When it reached sparse grasses, the fire softened, but as it entered thicker stands, the flames surged—sometimes extending twenty to thirty feet into the air. Combined with drifting smoke and falling ash, the scene became abstract and surreal at times, as the featured blog image shows.

James Hall, in his Notes on The Western States (1838), vividly described the scene: “No sight can be more sublime than to behold at night a stream of fire several miles in breadth advancing across these plains, leaving behind it a black cloud of smoke, and throwing before it a vivid glare which lights up the whole landscape with the brilliancy of noonday.” What an experience that must have been.

Indigenous peoples used fire as a land-management tool for centuries, helping to shape the millions of acres of tallgrass prairie that once covered Illinois in the early 1800s. Fires were used to attract game to newly sprouted plants, clear underbrush in woodlands, and create open sightlines around camps and villages.
