Bald Eagles in Illinois

An immature Bald Eagle wants what the adult eagle has in its talons . . . a fish. Of course it’s the only fish around for miles . . . Not! When deep winter strikes in the upper Midwest and the Mississippi River freezes over (as you can see in the background of this image), the Bald Eagles gather by the hundreds around the locks and dams to catch fish in the open waters. It is a feeding frenzy and it’s literally like shooting fish in a barrel for the eagles.

Did you know?

Every winter more than 3,100 bald eagles winter in Illinois, more than in any other state outside Alaska. The first eagles of the season are spotted in Illinois in December and remain in residence until they migrate back north in March, with January and February the optimal time to see eagles.
